Toxic gas production and silo ventilation

Equations were developed to predict the minimum safe duration of ventilationrequired in tower silos to reduce carbon dioxide and oxides of nitrogen to safe limits for human entry into the silo. Unlike previous analyses, the model developed in this paper accounts for gas produc tion during the period of ventilation. Two key inputs to the model are the rates of gas production and the value for the ventilation mixing factor, and data for both are very limited. On the basis of data that are available, this analysis suggests that NOx will not be diluted to safe levelsby ventilationwith a silage blower during the period of active gas production. During this period, especially the first week after placing forage in a tower silo, workers should not enter tower silos without protection of self-contained breathing apparatus. Des equations ont ete mises au point pour prevoir la duree de ventilation minimale necessaire a la securite dans des silos tours. Le but etait de reduire le taux de gaz carbonique et d'oxydes d'azote a des niveaux stirs permettant aux personnes de penetrer sans danger dans les silos. A la difference des analyses precedentes, le modele elabore ici tient compte de la production de gaz carbonique durant la periode de ventilation. Ce modele comporte deux elements cles : les taux de production de gaz et le facteur de melange de ventilation, pour lesquels les donnees sont tres limitees. A partir des renseignements disponibles, Tanalyse suggere que le NOx ne sera pas dilue a des niveaux surs par une souffleuse a fourrage durant la production active de gaz. Pendant cette periode, et surtout la premiere semaine suivant Tensilage du fourrage, les travailleurs ne devraient pas penetrer dans les silos sans etre proteges par des appareils respiratoires autonomes.
